Seriously...
I have wondered that too and I speculate they (carriers) became
orphans. I would venture that most of these projectors that
lost their carriers probably lost their cases also. That being
the case (pun not intended!) the carrier was stored in a different
place and projector stashed somewhere else.

Years pass and the owner forgets where the carrier was stored 
or the projector is inherited by other family members who have
no knowledge of the carrier. At least that's what I think! Any
other theories? It seems that soon these carriers will cost more
than the projectors!
