Agreed. But these applications are specialized. For a stereo enthusiast
like myself, the urge to point to a specific depth level rarely arises
(and I do a fair amount of instructional projection). Usually by pointing
to the screen, the viewer understands where in depth the comments aim.
Now, for instructional work like neurosurgery, university, educational
purposes, etc., it seems that a digital system is more appropriate than
film-based stereo projection. And a digital stereo pointer in principle
seems to be easier to construct.
