Peter Davis asks about previewers for re-orienting uncut rolls of film:
Since the one commercial example has already been described and its
limitations mentioned I won't go over it again. What I use for
pre-viewing is a little gismo made from a pair of pentaprisms salvaged
from old busted SLRs. They do the job of flipping the images
orientation so the film-plane can remain flat. I've never bothered
building a proper film-handling system for mine, but since the film
plane is flat it shouldn't be too hard to do so. I only use it for
previewing so I can decide which shots to actually mount. For that,
it's simple to mount the prisms on a piece of aluminum or wood and sit
it on top of a light table or steal light from the ceiling. Optically,
the viewer is very good. I use the viewing lenses from the cameras
which are acromats. The image inversion is all done in the prisms so
there aren't any extra reflections to worry about as would be the case
with mirrors.
This is one of the little projects that are covered in the hacking
project book I put together.
Has anyone with the book tried building the previewer? If so, what did
you think?
