The following got inadvertantly diverted off -- BW

Alas, the vignetting. The NuView was designed to work with a camcorder
whose optical and mechanical axes were coincident. Unfortunately, this is
not the case for consumer grade camcorder, the spec (Sony's) is very loose.
As a result, different camcorders vignette in different areas, some not at
all. Camcorders with larger fields of view than it was designed for
vignette equally on all four side.
There is no easy solution. The design of the NuView revolved around
increasing the field of view as much as possible, without exponential
increase in size and weight.
If the camcorder designers were cooperative, they would place the entrance
pupil of their lens further forward. This would make the first lens of the
camcorder smaller. There may be some marketing issues involved with lens
size, as it isn't terribly hard to design a good zoom lens with a smaller
sized first element than is common.
