I saw a set up in the lodge at Multinomah Falls (Columbia River
Gorge, Oregon) that had a Holmes type viewer with an antique view
of the falls totally encased in plexiglass with the eye pieces eposed
and a dowel attached to the view holder that stuck out of the box
and allowed viewers to slide it back and forth to focus. It seemed
simple and effective. Of course if one wanted to they could stick
something in the slot the dowel slid in and damage the view, but if
the tolerances were tight enough it would be hard.
Hope this helps,
