I really don't know what the REAL answer is, but another
variation is '50s!

I used to write it as 50's till someone also told me that this
wasn't correct. Since I didn't know better I checked it up and
found CONFLICTING information in quite a few books! If I
remember correctly, some books stated it as '50s and others as 50s.

The problem with 50's is that it's plural AND also a contraction.
For example, class of '54 is a contraction of 1954.

The plural of 1950 is 1950's. Sooo, if you now contract 1950's,
it becomes '50's! ;-)
