Or, would it be '50s?  Usually you signify 1950 as '50 when abbreviating
the year.

I would expect proper grammer to be...
(Example 1) 1957's the year I was born.  (i.e. 1957 is the year...)  

(Example 2) In the 1950s (several years from 1950 through 1959) land in
Plano was cheap!  

(Example 3) In the late '50s and early '60s I gave my parents much joy. 
Then I hit my teen years!
