NEXT STEREO MEETING JULY 10th

This meeting will feature one of our own members, Darren Gunderson! I
met Darren thru the internet and he and his wife came in from Junction
City to see my 3-D show at the K.C. Museum. We talked then about forming
this group and he's been a great inspiration to me to get it going!
Darren has a realist format projector and will be bringing it to meeting
to show us some of his work! We'll also be having "Show and Tell" so
bring any stereo prints, slides (2x2 or realist) and your favorite 3-D
gear to show! Of course we'll be continuing our "get to know you" talks
from new members and look forward to seeing you all at our second KCMPA
Stereo Divisiom meeting!!

This meeting will happen Saturday July 10th at 1:00 pm at 2030 Grand,
(rear dock entrance) in beautiful downtown K.C., MO! I say rear entrance
because access to my studio is thru the dock on the alley between Walnut
and Grand Ave.. There is a large parking lot across the alley and you
will see our KCMPA sign on the black steel fence surrounding the dock.
Call me at 816-421-4559 if you're from out of town and need directions
to locate us. Looking forward to seeing you all!!

STEREO MEMBER PROFILE; DARREN GUNDERSON

I have been a middle school science teacher at Fort Riley Middle School
for the past 12 years. I am also the yearbook and photography sponsor.
I also am the camp director at Camp Tomah Shinga, a Lutheran Church camp
near Junction City.

I started in 3-D about 5 years ago. I have been collecting camera's for
a number of years and enjoy using vintage equipment. I'm a real admirer
of the work of William Henry Jackson and since many of the photo's of
his that the average person can afford are Holmes cards, I had collected
a number of them. I got to thinking that I should be able to do the
same thing. I knew what the 1870's vintage cameras were like but knew I
could not afford one at the time. I found information about being able
to use a slide bar for making stereo pairs. I was a little skeptical
but I made a platform with a ruler on it and went out to shoot some
pairs using my old Crown Graphic with a rollfilm back. I was amazed when
I contact printed the pairs and used a couple of lenses from my
classroom and they were in stereo right away. I was hooked. I quickly
got my first stereo camera, a Kin-Dar. It took some work to get it
operational because it had a weird escapement for the slow speeds that
was broken. I did not keep that one very long as a collector wanted it
for his collection. I then got a very nice Kodak. My first slides were
with this camera. I was learning as I went. I still use this camera,
especially with my students at school. I then got a Realist, a TDC
Vivid and a Revere 33. For slides I currently prefer using the Revere,
but it just depends on what I feel like at the moment.

As much as I like doing slides I still want to have a camera that will
make negatives the size of Holmes card prints so that I can contact
print them. I am slowly constructing one that will use 5x7 sheet film
and put the 2 negs on one sheet of film. I also am going to experiment
with making panoramic stereo's with my 7x17 inch Korona banquet camera.

I'm looking forward to meeting more stereo enthusiasts and think this
KC3-D group is a great idea! I know i'll enjoy bringing and showing some
of my work at the upcoming meeting, July 10th!! See you there!

FUTURE STEREO FIELD TRIPS

We're planning to incorporate stereo field trips in the off months
between meetings. August 7th will be a trip to Missouri Town at Lake
Jacomo near Blue Springs! Missouri Town is an reconstructed 1855 village
using period buildings that have been moved to the site. This will be a
great source for some wonderful 3-D photos!! For October trip, Darren
Gunderson has invited us to Junction City for an overnight field trip to
Camp Tomah Shinga in the beautiful Kansas Flint Hills. I'm sure this
will be a wonderful source for some great 3-D photography also! Look
forward to these events!

3-D TIPS; COMPOSITION

All the composition rules for 2-D photos apply to 3-D but some
additional points need to be considered for sucessful 3-D photographs!
First we need to realise that only picture elements from about 7 out to
around 30 or 40 feet will appear to have depth. A photo of a beautiful
mountain in the distance will seem "flat" without some foreground
elements to compare it with! Try to include close elements (7-15 feet),
medium elements (20-30 feet) and some infinity to create "3-D space" in
your stereo pair. This rule can be overdone by including an element too
close to the camera which creates too much "depth" and will be hard to
view. Of course we know rules are made to be broken but one that is very
important is to make sure everything in the 3-D photo is in sharp focus,
especially if it is part of the close or medium foreground!! 3-D photos
recreate the way we see normally by being able to look around at
different parts of the scene and being able to focus on all of them.
Viewing out of focus elements in a 3-D photo causes "3-D anxiety"! Keep
in mind these points the next time you're out creating that "ultimate"
3-D photograph!!!
