I would have to agree that this reference is suspicious. Limbacher writes
on page
140, "In 1903, stereoscopic movies were shown at the Paris Exposition under
the
guidence of French movie pioneers, Auguste and Louis Lumiere." There is
one
obvious problem with this statement. There was no Paris Exposition in
1903. The
Paris Exposition referred to occurred in 1900. To try and get some more
info on
this, I phoned Mr. Limbacher today. Since that particular item is not
footnoted in
his book, I asked if he might remember where it was he ran across it, or at
least
point me in the right direction. As I expected, he did not remember, since
the book
is now over 30 years old, and Mr. Limbacher is getting on in years. So I'm
afraid
we're on our own... I suppose it's possible that since Louis Lumiere
received a
patent in Nov. 1900 on 3-D movies that he staged a public demonstration at
the
Paris Expo earlier that year, but I'd like to see some proof. Since I'm a
World's
Fair buff, I'll see if I can find anything in my WF sources that refer to
Lumiere at
the Paris Expo. If I do locate any info, I'll be sure to let you folks
know!
