P3D More on Realist to VM slide dupes

Thanks to Bob Weir and Ron for your responses re:  reducing Realist
format slides to VM size for mounting in reels.  Ron, your idea sounded
very good in theory, but, as you said, it would take some bucks to
experiment until it became a practical reality.  

Let's assume we've managed to reduce the Realist slides to VM size.  I
fear the next hurdle to overcome would be the cutting and then mounting
of the pair in the reel.  The original Viewmaster cutter is hard to find
and quite expensive now.  I have had no experience mounting VM slides,
so I am wondering if there is another (read: cheaper) way to cut the
slides with enough precision to then mount them in the reels with some
control over vertical alignment and horizontal adjustment for the stereo
window.  Would the tiny size of the film chips make it more of a pain in
the posterior than it would be worth?
