There has been a bit of discussion of late regarding ISU recognition of
stereo cards and The ISU Intl Stereo Card Exhibition. ISU did not simply
recognize stereo cards overnight. The ISU Chain of Command did not get up
one morning and say "Let's see what we can do for the stereo cards
enthusiasts in this organization." And as far as the changes being made
by one person , that is pretty mind boggling. I don't know of anyone,
other than perhaps Paul Wing, that could affect changes of this magnitude
by themselves. The addition of Stereo Card activities to the ISU was a
group effort.
I was not a member of ISU until early 1998 when I was invited to join and
become a part of a committee of stereo card enthusiasts looking to
possibly starting some stereo card activities in ISU. My Inviter even
offered to pay my ISU membership fees, but I declined this part of the
offer, and joined ISU and the Stereo Card Committee. It consisted of 5
people, 1 Dane, 2 Germans and 2 Americans. Using Email we explored the
various options open to us and decided that a ISU Stereo Card Circuit,
based roughly on the SSA card folios/circuits, and a International Stereo
Card Exhibition, approved by the PSA to attract more entrants, was the
way to go. We drafted up rules, had two folks volunteer to be Folio
Secretary and Exhibition Chairman, and presented our plan to ISU. These
two suggestions were approved and are now in the execution stage.
The ISU Stereo Card Circuit, with Walter Dubronner as Secretary, is now
on it's 2d trip around the world and seems to be well received and a
success. After all where else can you see contemporary stereo cards from
Iran and Austria as well as many other countries.? This Circuit is open
to all ISU members. including beginners in the Classic Format. It is not
a competitive Circuit and there is no voting on whose is the best card.
If you think you might like to join the ISU Card Circuit please contact
Walter Dubronner by email Dubronner@xxxxxxx
The ISU International Stereo Card Exhibition has a closing date of 28
August. The accepted cards will be displayed at the ISU Congress in
Lindau, Germany in September. It is open to stereographers world wide
and ISU membership is not a requirement to participate in this
exhibition. For entry forms contact me at the email address listed below
or the Exhibition Chairman Klaus Kemper at ddd.kemper@xxxxxxxxxxx It
is planned to hold this exhibition annually as a means of providing a bit
more cohesion among ISU members. I am serving as the "gofer" for this
exhibition, re mailing report cards, re packing and re mailing stereo
cards, and catalogs to try to save Klaus a bit on postage. As everyone
probably knows European postage is much more expensive than in the US.
These two activities received extensive coverage in ISU's Stereoscopy,
including a copy of the entry form for the ISU Card Exhibition. The
Exhibition has also been listed in the PSA Journal for the past three or
four months.
Based on my short experience in the ISU the organization seems to be more
than willing to meet the needs of the members. If there is someone, or
a group, that thinks there should be a International Stereo Slide
Exhibition and or slide postal folios in the ISU, I suggest they find
someone to serve as a chairman /folio secretary and make their wishes
known to the ISU Chain of Command, since these things don't "just
happen". Who knows, in the future we might have a combined Card/Slide
Exhibition.?
..
As far as a card display at the ISU Congresses, we will take that one
step at a time. This year there will be a display of the accepted cards
from the Exhibition, plus a display of ISU Stereo Card Circuit cards. In
the future, who knows. After all NSA didn't always have a big card
display like it does now. I remember the 1985 NSA Convention in St
Louis. There were two contemporary card displays, Steve Best's and mine,
and 4 or 5 vintage card displays
What started out as a small inoccuous posting has been dragged out over a
week. Of course the attendant publicity is good for the ISU Congress in
Lindau and it also had a positive affect on the number of people asking
for ISU Stereo Card Exhibition entry forms. It appears to me that George
Themelis has helped the stereo card effort in the ISU and I want to
extend the thanks of the ISU Stereo Card Community to him.
