P3D flash painting

Has anyone out there done much "painting" with flashes? You know, putting
the camera's on bulb and then triggering flashes manually to produce desired
affect - all at night of course. If so, my question is whether I can
produce secondary and tertiary colors with the primary colored filters that
you can buy for flashes. For example, if I flashed a building in red, and
then in blue, would it show up on the film as purple? I know this would
take some practice and experimentation, but it seems that almost any color
pallette could be achieved by using combinations such as 3 red flashes an
one blue for a violet hue etc. Maybe it would be more worth my time simply
to put colored tissue paper like what art classes use over the flash
instead.
