I have done some flash painting as well as with flash lights in stereo.

As far as using colored gels or tissue paper over the flash:

If you flash your 3 primary colors seperately wherever the light over
laps you will have white light.  It is something that requires a lot of
tries to know what results you will get.  It is worth the effort, and
can give great expected and un expected results.
