P3D aperture when shooting in stereo

Since I began shooting in stereo, which wasn't long ago, a friend told me to
always shoot with my lenses as wide open as possible for maximum stereo
effect. I have done this and have no complaints. Since the lenses on my
rangefinders are f/1.7 this isn't difficult. I have also made some good
stereo pictures at f/8 and f/16. Why does shooting with a larger aperture
supposedly render a better stereoscopic effect?
