Interesting question, Ray!  My Sony DCR-TRV103 instructions have a
Specifications page, but nothing on it refers to any compression.  Since
the Hi-8 tape, when used for digital 8, records for only half the time
that Hi-8 will record, the implication may be that there is no
compression.  It seems worth a check on the Sony website or a phone call
to Sony tech support on Monday.  If you should get a chance to research
it before I do, please let us know on the list.
