P3D "Art" vs. "Craft"

The tools of the painter are brush, pigment, base, wash, drying rates,
dissolution, &c. and the techniques of employing these tools to create
an image.

The tools of a photographer are subject, light, depth of field, angle of view,
exposure, reciprocity, filtration, processing, dodging, burning, &c.,
and the techniques of employing these tools to create and image.

Both are crafts in that greater skill in employing the tools allows more
control in creating an image. Better tools allow more reliable results.

If a painter argues that because the subject is interpreted (no direct
record as in photography) that the process is elevated to art, one
cannot argue (one need not agree either); it is futile.

I respect the skill of painter and photographer equally. I appreciate
the images created using either process. The photographer is no less
a craftsperson than the painter. Photographs are no less statements/
decorations/records/entertainment than paintings.

Gregg

P.S. What about trick photography and collage?
