Assuming you have a scanner (I assume you scanned in the photos rather
than used a digital camera but I could be wrong) . . . why don't you
fool around with the slide scanning methods found at:

http://www.abstractconcreteworks.com/essays/scanning/Backlighter.html

(and elsewhere on that site)

You could then report back to the list on how well your experiments
went.  Just a thought.
