It's a matter of opinion in most cases - IMHO. It comes down to having a
bunch of people who collect very specific subjects, and once they have
most of the "regular" ones, a harder to find one might be worth spending
too much on because "you just have to have it to round out the
collection". My rule-of-thumb for selling views on eBay is: Start at
$2.00 or so so I break even with my costs and see if the view rounds out
someone's collection. ;-)
Personally, I am a VERY casual collector - preffering to mainly stick
with my APEC exchange cards (which are relatively inexpensive) and with
views on 3D-CDs. I can't imgine paying $100 for a card, even one that
would really interest me... I have far too many things I want to do with
that kind of money right now, and how could I get $100 worth of
enjoyment from it? As an investment you say? Again, money is an issue...
But, there are folks with plenty of money out there, who have been
collecting for a while. They actively want to "round out their
collections", and are sometimes willing to pay to do so.

This is in the eye of the beholder. As an investment, this is probably a
true statemnet, but to a collector, it may not be. Again - if it's
something they don't have, but fits into their niche - you never know...
