The New York Public Library has completed digitizing and displaying the
Robert N. Dennis Collection of some 12,000 stereoviews on the WWW address
above. Bob Wier first let us know about the project (see below).

Also, from the archives of the New York Times:

"July 22, 1999, Thursday

          LIBRARY/PHOTOGRAPHY THEN AND NOW;
          Imaging: From Daguerreotypes to Satellites

          By TOM VANDERBILT

...The library's Robert N. Dennis Collection has more than 12,000
stereoscopes. The collection focues on small-town life in New York, New
Jersey and Connecticut, covering everything from aerialists to zoos. Like
the Detroit collection, the stereoscopes form a fascinating portrait of
American life, including Niagara Falls daredevils and the ''idiot asylum''
in Syracuse, and feature portraits of important Americans like Edgar Allan
Poe and Mark Twain. Curiously, the stereoscopes cannot be viewed in 3-D on
the computer screen, but the site sells an inexpensive cardboard viewer that
will accomplish the task. "

(The article confuses "stereoscopes" with "stereoviews").
