P3D ViewMaster on the BBC

The Edingburgh Festival has just started, and the BBC has begun a
series of regular late night programmes covering all the shows and
activities.
The opening sequence, which is quite substantial is all VM based.
A red (I think new virtual) viewer is held up to the camera, as if the
camera
were looking in to the viewer, and then
a series of "scenes" are turned through the viewer, appearing briefly
and then moving away, as if you were looking at a series of views
through a VM. Then the viewer is moved away from the camera, and a hand
appears and pulls out the reel from the viewer, on which is printed the
programme title "Edingburgh Nights". Then the link between each of
the items on the show is a picture of two counter rotating VM reels.
All very impressive.
A few years ago a programme by Jonathan Ross called I think
"Strange America"( apologies, I only report the news) used a similar
intro and link, but much more briefly.
Interesting that even today, and even in England, a VM is a visual
symbol for looking at a range of exciting and entertaining things, and is
used to visually convey the message that you are about to see a
series of images of places you may never visit yourself, but here they
are brought to in your armchair.
Kind regards,
John Bradley
