P3D Detroit Report!
Just came back from Detroit (I was traveling alone and had to
stop to take a short nap... I usually nap while I drive but
this time I decided to play it "safe")...
Very nice meeting with lots of people... The program was
the "Michigan Magic", a superb production by Steve Kiesling with
images from club members. I think it is 6th time I see this
program and every time is better than the last!
A large number of slides in the "Open Competition". I cheated,
so to speak, by entering the two slides that won first places
in Cleveland the night before (the picture of the boat and the hyper
of the plane). The boat won first place in Detroit too (this
one turns out to be a winner after all) while the plane got
a third place. But, I substituted the flower picture that
did not score well in Cleveland, with a shot from Paris, which
also took a third place. A very good start for me but Dennis
Hanser did even better with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. It is
going to be a tight race... Many difficult assignments follow
("What am I?", "Geometry", "Stormy Weather", etc.)
Some excellent entries from "our own" Paul Talbot who took
two 3rd places. (This is very good, considering that there
were only two first places and one second and no HMs).
I was in Detroit early this time and decided to visit the
Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. Many interesting subjects
for stereo photography! For Mark D: You want "wheels"? (future
OSPS assignment). Go to the Ford Museum. Wheels galore! My
cameras were on fire, as expected! Around 6 pm I got alarmed
when I noticed that I was alone in the Greenfield Village. It
turns out that the park closes at 5:00!!! Fortunately, there
were security guards to let me out!
Now I am looking forward to getting back these new rolls
and also picking up the 15 rolls from Toronto/Niagara Falls
which are waiting for me at work.

PS. I am happy to report that my relatives and safe and
sound in Athens. The earthquake was very strong but
they survived! I remember being through a strong
earthquake when I was a college student in Athens.
It is really terrifying... The only thing that can
make things better is a stereo camera and the thought
that if buldings start to fall, that will give you
something interesting to photograph! :-)
