P3D Raod Trip
Yesterday I took the challenging 130 mile drive from San Diego through Orange
County and past downtown L.A. to attend the September meeting of the Stereo
Club of Southern California.
This club is home to such luminaries and familiar P3Ders as Lawrence and
Cassie Kaufman, Charley Van Pelt (VM legend), Ray Zone,(anaglyph legend)
Mitch Walker,Steve Berezin, Oliver Dean, Lincoln Kamm, and Mark Kernes among
others. Not to mention Susan Pinsky and David Starkman who are traveling and
couldn't attend
This is a large club that gets a wonderful turnout at their meetings of about
40 to 50 people. I was terribly honored when I was asked to help judge their
club competition which I enjoyed greatly. They routinely project in both
Realist and 2x2 format, switching back and forth several times.
Participation is high and I was delighted to see the eclectic variety of
shooting styles and subjects. Macro, light painting, nudes, black and white,
antique portraiture.
One thing I noticed in stark contrast to my own group in San Diego, is that
this is a ROWDY bunch! They yell out comments, instructions and wise cracks
all through the competition. All good natured of course. Makes my little
group look like a bunch of parliamentarians. Did Art Linkletter and Harold
Lloyd behave like that?
The second part of their program was the Boris Starosta show which I had
missed by choosing to skip NSA Richmond '98. I'm familiar with his work
which is why I chose this particular meeting to attend. Great stuff as
expected.
After the meeting ended at about 10:30, 15-20 of the members convened at a
local restaurant where many had a full meal and the fun continued. I
understand this is the usual practice. They're night owls too!
I arrived back home in San Diego at 2 A.M., a mere 13 hours for the whole
adventure. I tried in vain to persuade them to relocate their meetings to a
place that's easier to reach for lil ole me. It's too bad the drive is such
a freaking ordeal!
