RE: George Dr. T..muses on Sunny 16 = incident meter, and gives
two examples 1. White Steps in Athens
2. Black Bears.
In the first..he says sunny 16 gave proper rendering of steps..BUT
in other exposure S1 misread, he liked the darker step rendition!
On the Bears..he said sunny 16 gave good exposure overall but no
detail in Bears faces..which came out fine with +2 stops..but
EVERYTHING ELSE OVEREXPOSED! (not a very pretty slide?)
Well the Sunny 16 offsets are supposed to be the Kodak
exposure guide..which allows for light and dark subject matter to
be compensated by 1/2 stop.or more.
As reflective meter also appoximates grey card as its average..it
needs compenstation too.
All I can say here is that one needs to understand latitude of film
and the excessive brightness range of natural lighting and fudge to
try to get what is most important. Hollywood long ago solved this
by skims to cut sunlight and reflectors and floods to boost
shadows..all to keep entire scene within latitude of the film.
Meters are stupid without a bright owner..and Sunny 16 use is apt
to make a brighter photographer with some understanding..
(While George promotes Sunny 16 as handy for beginners...it is
not HIS as some here have said..but was first expounded by Jack
Tupper of Kodak Research Labs..later named Sunny 16 by photo
press.)
