P3D miniaturization

My mind is wandering this Friday night after an intense week
at school and juggling ISP's, Web site hosts, etc.

I recall mention of the phenomenon of "miniaturization."

IIRC this occurs in two situations:

(1) When doing crosseyed freeviewing. I've noticed this
every time I've done it. I get the stereo effect, but the
image is smaller than it was before I crossed my eyes--
it almost seems I can't quite reach my eyes out far
enough to see it properly.

(2) When shooting with excessive lens separation, as with
an XA2 twin rig. I guess if I want to see this, I either
have to get another XA2 or put mine on a slide bar and
move it too far! :-)

What is the theory behind this, and is it the same for both
situations?
