Well, that's a terrific idea, though I'm not sure about the labor for
labor's sake part! In fact more young photogs seem to be returning to
those very tactile, elementary technologies - a way of visiting their
ancestors and perhaps in retreat from the thundering avalanche of
inscrutable "smart" gadgets. They want to clear their heads and
experience the basic event - capturing light in a box and freezing an
image there. Of course this will be the only option when digital drives
out commercial/consumer film use entirely, so may as well start mixing
those chemicals...

But let me repeat my premise - technology is not bad, technology that is
devised to avoid the trouble and expense of thinking and learning and
dealing with live human beings - that's bad, and we are ever more up to
our scalps in that kind of innovation. It's a mass delusion of our day
and a threat to the smarts and the arts, to the quality of services
available, and to human workers who deserve better than to watch the
machines run.

Did I mention we're about to buy our first modern computer? I'll keep the
old one though, because I can actually write my own programs on it. Call
me a Luddite. ;-)
