Actually, according to Morgan and Symmes' "Amazing 3D", the
camera was first advertised in the November 1945 issue of
American Photography magzine. That's two years before the
camera was introduced! David White was keeping everyone in a
great suspense, drooling over these ads! One of these early ads
is reproduced (where else?) in DrT's Realist book under this
caption:
"Fig. 4.1. One of the first ads for the Stereo Realist, around
1945, before the camera was available for sale to the public.
Note some unusual features in both camera and viewer, mainly the
film advance and rewind knobs in the camera and focusing knob in
the viewer. These must have been prototypes. "
My guess is that the camera (& viewer) pictured in these early
ads are prototypes. Realist did not produce a 3.5 with 1/200
max speed or curly knobs as far as I know.
