  Compared to other (non-stereo) cameras
I've seen the Realist has a very non-smooth
film plane. And the Realist was created in
the Kodachrome days.

I've noticed that Kodachrome slides much
easier through my realist than E6 films
(the anti-halation backing maybe). So perhaps
it is due to modern film in an old camera
that works fine with Kodachrome.

BTW it helps to focus to infinity to lessen
the pressure on the film pressure plate.

I think the reason it gets harder as you go
through the roll is that the takeup spool fills
with film and becomes larger in diameter which
gives you less mechanical advantage when advancing.

If it really is at the film canister side then
you should try turning the rewind knob to loosen
it up and see if that helps (though this may make
overlap worse).
