P3D Re: Hollow Face Illusion

It would be interesting to know where the first examples of the 'hollow
face' illusion came from, and in which century, and presumably in a
sculpted form.

Anyone who has visited the Haunted House at Disneyland (Calif.) has seen it
at the entrance of the attraction. Some have mistaken them for 'holograms'.

Holographic 3D displays have for years featured a variation on this when
presenting a 'pseudoscopic' (inverted in depth) version of a concave
face-mold. In other words a hologram is made of a face-mold (the orthoscopic
image), then copied to invert the image (inside-out) and project the new
image out in front of the plate. The new image appears to follow the
viewer.

These illusions have as much to do with the mind's desire to reorganize a
'strange' visual experience into one that is 'normal' to cognative
functions. (We expect objects - especially faces - to be convex to the
viewer).

Another source for this illusion, one without added lighting, is available
from Hi-Q Products (Calif.) - the 'Illusion of Vincent' and posted at
