I was planning to do something like that today...  One factor in
this illusion is the size of the image or the distance to it. 
The closer you come, the stonger the stereopsis information that
is working against the illusion.  So how close do you photograph
this and how do you view it (viewer vs. projection?)

No, it does not have to, but it certainly reinforces the
illusion.  When Bruce said the he does not get the illusion, I
suspect that not having the light from underneath has a lot to
do with it.
