The face I saw was very skillfully painted with highlights and shadows
where they would be in a convex face lit from above in a conventional way
(These same painting tricks we used in the theater to make credible
wrinkles and folds on our faces; not as needed a skill now as then,
regrettably :-( ).  So in generally flat light, the painted face enhances
the illusion of convexity, without the necessity of bottom lighting.

BTW, I think the manufacturer name on the back said "Wonder Art" if anyone
is in the market.
