Yellow, orange and red filters will progressively darken a sky but
realize that the entire look of the image may also change. The color of
the filter will LIGHTEN the same color, and will DARKEN an opposing
color. Here is the scene:
Wheat field, red barn, yellow maple tree, and cloudy sky.
Yellow filter- leaves will appear very light ( almost white) wheat will
be light..sky will darken 1/2 stop
red filter- barn will appear very light, sky will appear 2 stops darker
etc.
Look through the colored filters while ignoring the monochromatic
disturbance, and study the relative tones in the scene. Look at a red
shirt through a red filter ( notice the tone) now look at the shirt
throuh a blue filter......the shirt will change from a light grey tone
to almost black. ( depending on the filter density) It requires an
effort to ignore color and study tones when using filters with B&W.
