Granted the stereo/3d community has a reputation for "rigging things up" but 
I suspect that, with my limited skill level & technology, the waste involved 
in making my own polarising, cross screen or graduated filters would greatly 
outweigh the cost of a commercial purchase. 

It does seem a bit wasteful to buy a 7" tall filter to utilise less than two 
inches of its height.  On the other hand, a 5" diameter polariser would cover 
both lenses and the viewfinder of my Kodak quite convieniently....
