I have a 600 DPI Microtek Scanmaker X6 (or something like that) with the
light lid option (sold seperately). Total cost was less than $200. It
can easily scan in mounted slides at a reasonable resolution and quality
for digital presentation. I have even used it to scan Tru-Vue strips. I
did a good bit of research before buying it, and this one of only a
handfull of scanners that can adequately do transparency scanning well.
Others with similar features and capabilities were far more money, and
did not offer anywhere near enough _more_ to justify the added expense.
A note: scanning in the image is only a small part of the process. A
good scanner can scan in the raw image with little problems, but you the
user need to know how to tweak the software to get the best results -
both before and after the scan. The scanning tips web site offers a HUGE
amount of knowledge about this part of the equation, and is a good place
to start.
