A loose definition would be - the physical edge of the stereo view.
Think of this "border" as a window frame through which you look at the
3D image. A really nice example by David Lee can be seen at:

Many, including myself occasionally frame/trim images to make part of
the subject to come "through the window". This doesn't always work, but
it can be very effective in certain cases. By triming/masking the left
and right sides of your image, you can "place" things closer to, or
farther away from the "window". Here is an example of a stereoview by
Gabriel Jacob where the Lion's head is behind the window, but you can
see/imagine how the nose is at the widow and could have been brought
throught the window a bit more - making it more "in your face".
