P3D Re: Teco-Nimslo

I'm glad to hear from Jim Harp that someone else leans
toward leaving the camera unaltered. Penny pincher that
I am, I hate wasting film. But switching from normal
to closeup in mid-roll is a pain if you do the modification.
I like easy switching--when picture taking I tend to have
a lot of other things on my mind and one more thing to
forget might make me lose the picture! :-)
I also keep hearing about film advance problems. I got
detailed instructions on doing it myself and it does involve
removing half of the teeth on a gear, but in three separate
groups, so you wind up with this weird-looking gear having
three evenly-spaced clusters of teeth. I can't see that
it helps the gear or its mate when the teeth cruise past
the open space and hit the next cluster. It might also
depend on what film you use. I always put 200-speed
(Kodachrome 200) in mine--faster films are thicker and
harder on the advance mechanism.
I use the closeup lenses from StereoType, which are just
little slivers of glass--inexpensive and space-saving,
but easy to lose! :-( The whole thing, though, with
distance (these are great since the Nimslo doesn't focus
anywhere near infinity!) and two closeup lenses, fits
easily into a small camera case. The camera has Velcro
where appropriate to hold the auxliaries in front of
the main lenses and to store the ones not in use.
The Nimslo closeups from this rig are the ones that
so impressed Dr. T.
Don't you have to modify a normal Nimslo to make the Teco
accesory lenses fit?
