Let me know the next time you visit Baltimore, DC, or Annapolis. I live
in Laurel, MD. Centered on these three cities and about 40 minutes from
each. I have only 1 2x2 stereo photo but I know how to talk shop. Mostly
I am a lurking techie.
My one photo is an SLR chacha taken of the state capitol building in
Annapolis through a burned out brick facade. One of the surviving window
frames is the natural frame for the state capitol.
I took it while laying in the gutter inside the police baricade and
pretending that I did not hear the patroling firewoman who was telling
me that I should not be there. The facade was torn down a couple of
weeks later.
My first attempt was on a Sunday at 4pm. I had just taken a photo course
and was trying to apply my newfound lighting knowledge. I knew that the
red brick facade in the shade and the white capitol building in the sun
would be too much contrast.
I got it developed overnight and was pleased to find out that I was
correct and that the red brick was too dark and the state house too
light. I guess some people might not understand why I was pleased at a
bad shot. But, like it says in "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle
Maintenance", an experiment is only a failure if it yields no
information. In my case, it confirmed my application of some new rules.
Armed with new confidence, I went back on Monday afternoon and took the
shot at 1pm with both the red brick facade and the state capitol in the
sun. The bad news is that I was using a lens doubler and did not set the
stop correctly so I ended up with a darker print than I wanted. I
realized my error only minutes after taking the shot but could not
reshoot as the guard was watching me now.
Nevertheless, with the range of print film, the shot printed ok. I had
slides made and entered it in a local competition. Projection made it
obvious that the factory mounting won't do. Now I just show them to
friends with a pair of $3 viewers.
