P3D November OSPS Meeting Report

The weather was terrible in the mid-west, raining hard all day long.
This prevented a few members to come to our meeting but those who
did were treated with excellent programs. (One of the people who
did not make it was Mark Dottle... That's why I have to write this
Report... :-))

Our guests for the night were Mary Ann and Wolfgang Sell who drove
from Cincinnati bringing brought unique VM items to share. As
part of the program we saw some very rare, interesting &
entertaining VM reels in glorious 3d projection with a VM
Stereomatic 500 with 2 1/4 inch lenses. The quality of stereo
projection is certainly equivalent to Realist.

The first Member's Presentation followed with 5 presentations for
the price of 3 (what a bargain!) These were:

- Harold Kaiman: Pictures from his visit to the NSA Holmes'
Library in Cincinnati (The Sell's are the curators). This is
a great place, certainly worth a visit!

- George Themelis: "Through the Glass Window", a technique to
photograph displays with a single camera and a wide angle lens.
Let someone else set it up and you shoot it. Get the picture?

- Dennis Petti: "I am stumped!" Images of tree stumps, one of
Dennis' favorite subjects. Now, wood you call this an
obsession? Very creative narration in this one!

- Bill Battle (guest): "Computer 3D". Fascinating stereo images
created entirely with a computer. You must see it to believe it!

- George Themelis: "NSA & PSA Conventions". People and events
from this summer's major stereoscopic conventions. Ron Fross
brought some of his model pictures to show with his supercharged
Airequipt and, what can I say? His Realist shots look better
than my RBT S1 shots! I was shocked! Plus, he was asking the
models to do funny things like stick their hands out of the
window, view with a Realist viewer, etc. Nice job Ron!

Three new members joined our club in this meeting. One member is
a fellow who I met when I went to the Cleveland Natural History
Museum to present a 3d program. He had a digital camera and was
enjoying using it. I told him that he now needs a slide bar to
start shooting 3D. He liked the idea and borrowed my own (Bogen)
slide bar. He showed up in our meeting with a two dozen prints
and a stereoscope. All with his digital camera and printer.
He is in love with stereo and joined our club. These are the
success stories that make our efforts to recruit new members
well worth it!

I think digital is very good for stereo and will bring more
and more people into 3d in the future.

That's it for the time. You'll read the rest in the Stereogram
(with many pictures too!)

We are preparing a nice special on Mary Ann and Wolfgang Sell
(does any one know how they got started in stereo? We will
tell you! BTW, Mary Ann will be the President of NSA in 2000)
Also "How I Took the Gold with my First Reel", Joe Hohman
describes how he won the Gold Metal in last year's SCSC VM
competition, plus DrT's Tutorial, and more! Don't miss it!

Reporting from a very wet Cleveland,

George Themelis
