It already has, but only here and there. The only camera my wife uses
now is her Digital Nikon 950 camera, and I borrow it quite a bit.
It is being used where traditional film systems used to be used, and would
have been used had she not had this digital camera.

When I made my first full-fledged holmes stereo card recently for
my local club's competition, I did it with her digital camera and
printed it on my computer's printer. I thought it looked pretty decent
technically. Obviously, this is a role normally taken by film
camera systems (and all other entrants except one other used film).
Note that I'm not talking about computer generated images, just
using a digital camera as a film-camera replacement.

For digital cameras to dominate the mass market, there probably would
have to be a change in habit rather than straight replacement (like
camcorder images usually aren't projected on a projection screens
even though a few may do so).
