Maybe partly that images with exaggerated depth may often have other
distortions - for example the keystoning you get when toeing-in a camera on
a close object.

Another problem is that if an image is displayed with an object coming out
of the screen very close to you, the decoupling of accomodation and
convergence may not happen as easily as for smaller depth ranges (or small
couplings will have magnified effects). Certainly I am finding people with
experience looking at stereo images have less trouble with depth than
relative newbies... anyone able to comment on their experiences in this?

I know I *still* can't do cross-eyed freeviewing, and even a brief spell
trying gives me a massive headache. I guess some people's eyes just aren't
as flexible as others.
