P3D Re: The Best 3D IMAX ever (Tom Deering)

The review of Siegfried and Roy's IMAX 3D 'The Magic Box' by Tom Deering was
one of the best reviews I have read on this list. Reason? It featured a
passionate and articulate blend of discussing content and form. With
examples that went far beyond the phrase (which appears from time to time on
this list) 'the 3D was good'.
It also provoked the question (perhaps Mr. Deering can comment): who were
the early magicians or illusionists that utilized stereoscopic 3D (still or
moving) in their presentations?
In 2D cinema, we have Georges Melies (inpsired by the French magician Robert
Houdin) - making films in 1896 to 1914 -- a magician himself, turned film
pioneer, who totally transformed the motion-picture medium of his day. He
first used film within his popular magic presentations, then set about to
create a body of film works 'exhibited on their own'. He is also credited
with creating the fundamental 'language' of special effects and fantasy
sets.
If you've seen his works, you know the range, and the remarkable shift in
attitude from cinema as a 'recording of reality' to an expression of
'fantastic possibilities' that he was responsible for.
To whom in 3D (magicians/illusionists) do we owe that honor? Or is this
happening only now?
