You must either be buying really cheap "regular" LEDs or you found
some really expensive white ones...

Prices I've seen run from $2 - $8 per each LED - and considering
they last 110,000 hours of continuous use, they don't seem expensive
to me.

There are other factors to consider.  Price doesn't seem to be one.

(Note: not all white LEDs are the same - and they are "cutting edge"
technology which is improving even as we sleep.  Today's are brighter
and whiter than those produced 20 minutes ago!)
