P3D Tilt - which way is OK?

As Ray Moxom said (quoting a Kodak publication):

> You can tilt it up
> You can tilt it down
> But don't tilt it sideways.

In case you wonder why you cannot tilt it sideways, it is a
psychological/physiological effect. It will not result in
pictures that are misaligned during mounting (as many people
think). It will just be disturbing to look at these sideways
tilted pictures but only if there is a level reference in the
picture, like the sea level or a clear horizon level. There are
situations where people tilt cameras sideways for special
effects. Also, there are cases where the scene totally lacks a
reference horizon when you can tilt any way you like. An
example of this last situation is shooting from top looking
directly down.

But, to be safe, do not tilt the camera sideways unless you have
a reason for doing so.

Many cameras from the '50s have a built-in level to help you
keep the camera leveled. Examples: Kodak, TDC Vivid, Revere.
Others do not have a built-in level. Example: Realist. A
company made an accessory level for the Realist to be attached
to the front so it can be seen through the viewfinder window.
These are very difficult to find. Some people attach external
levels in stereo cameras. Others don't bother.

You can tilt the camera up or down for creative/dramatic
compositions. There is a claim that if you tilt the viewer the
same way, while viewing these pictures, the realism of the
stereo pictures will be enhanced. This does not do much for me
as I am used to sitting in a desk and supporting the viewer on
the table by the bottom edge, hence always looking down.
