The Stitz mirrors are just not big enough for a 50mm lens.
There isn't enough room in the housing to make them big enough
and still adjustable. If they had put enough room, the whole
adapter would have to have been bigger. But given how uncommon
55mm lenses are compared to 50mm, I don't understand why they
did it that way. I think it's one of the main reasons the Stitz
never caught on for general photography. I got mine mainly for
closeups.

I had the same problem with my Stereo-tach beamsplitter when
I first got it and tried it with a 40mm lens.

Using the shutters does exactly what you describe, but it's no
solution because it increases the black band in the middle.

55mm is the shortest the Stitz will handle. Sorry--that's just
the way it is. For general photography using a 50mm lens, I
highly recommend the Pentax beamsplitter. Last I heard, it was
still being manufactured.
