I believe it is the ink, Bob.

Back in Aug. 1996, in a response to Marvin Jones I wrote:

Dennis Hall and Philip Johnson recieved a Patt. (5,398,131) for a full
color stereoscopic hard copy process using two groups of polarizing
inks. These are overlayed to produce a single sheet, imaging a stereo
pair.
