The zoom lens sounds like a handy way to test the Stitz! :-)
Actually, I have thought that a normal-to-telephoto zoom would
make a very nice combination with the Stitz--choose your F.L.,
adjust the mirrors--give an RBT Zoom a run for its money!
(Actually, you would come out 'way ahead on the money end! B*>)
I have tried it with a zoom of mine, but the front element rotates
to focus, which is very inconvenient with a beamsplitter!
If anybody out there knows of a decent, inexpensive auto diaphragm
zoom for Olympus OM-series, with a front element that _doesn't_
rotate, I'd like to hear....
As for using a tele-converter, most of them do couple all your
settings, and compensate for the increased exposure needed.
However, 2X is the least you're likely to find, which would
make your 50mm into 100. I've heard of 1.5X sometimes, but they
are rare, and that would still put you at 75mm. Tele-converters
cost in stops what they gain in F.L.--a 2X loses two stops.
They also degrade image quality--it can be decent, but it's
not the best. There are 55mm lenses out there, but you have to
hunt, and they cost more, although a used one shouldn't be too
bad. The Olympus costs more because it's a macro lens, I believe.
Don't know about Nikon. (There are some weak telephoto adapters
that fit on the front of the lens, mainly intended for rangefinder
cameras, but these probably wouldn't couple up to the beamsplitter
very well.) If I were you I would go for a 55, and if it is indeed
a macro for your camera system, you can explore the closeup
possibilities of the Stitz--and a 2X converter on that could
yield some startling macro shots! :-)
