Therefore the answer is holography.   I always laugh at Oy Vayeger when the Doctor hands someone a flat camera looking thing and asks them to "take some holos" for him.

To really listen to stereo you need a purpose-built room which will have one good listening spot.  Otherwise, it's headphones.  Surely you remember [ahem] the headphones+marijuana -required music of the seventies?
