Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Like George, I don't use a
case either (gets in the way), and I also use a camera bag. But I would
NEVER risk doing without a strap. I like the security of looping it around
my neck when shooting. It's just too easy to lose your grip on the camera in
too many situations. Has this ever actually happened to me? Maybe three or
four times in many, many years of shooting -- but all you need is once.
I don't happen to feel too comfortable with straps that attach to cases,
rather than to lugs built into the camera itself, because the leather often
deteriorates over time. It's false security. So, Lincoln, maybe you could
fashion a bracket from light aluminum stock that fastens into the tripod
socket and extends up the sides of the camera, then hook a good strap into
holes drilled into the aluminum bracket.
Good luck.
