Your question sounded rhetorical by since it may not have been - here is my
humble opinion:
I used to question some absurd wall hangings in museums as being art like
you. But the more I thought about it the more I thought that it was art (at
least to me). If I consider art as something that brings an emotion to me,
then an all black canvas with a red line in the corner could be considered
art (again at least to me). Which brings up another point on what is art?
Something could be considered ART to one person, and not so to another. As
for your question "What is not ART?" I would say anything that you don't
think is art, is not, to you. But it may be to someone else and maybe at
some later date it would be considered art by you.
Also as to your statement:
"If all those pieces are art, then the brick on any building is art. A pile
of dirt and weeds in my yard is art. The ever changing image on my computer
screen is art. The hole in my jeans is art. etc. etc. I could wrap my dog in
aluminum foil, throw some green paint on him, hang him in a tree, and call
him art. "Space Dog in Tree"
YES (at least to someone) I would like to see a dog wrapped in aluminum
foil, painted and hung from a tree. (if the dog could be hung without
injury). As for the brick, someone must think it is art, in fact one of the
Microsoft Windows Wallpapers is just a brick wall. As for the pile of dirt
with weeds or the hole in your jeans, take a few pictures of them and see.
Take a few stereo pictures of them too. It may surprise you or it may
surprise someone else and it may be art to you ot to someone else. IMHO
