What a coincidence, we were just discussing this at the table at
the Oakland Camera Club annual end-of-year luncheon (here's another
coincidence, it was my birthday). I was trying to explain this very
distinction.
I liken it to "ortho" stereoscopy. I first learned the tern in the late 70's
when I
read an article about work done by Panasonic (or maybe it was JVC). They
"half-heartedly" marketed equipment for binaural sound, you know, like
Toshiba
marketed the stereo camcorder. One person in the OCC discussion was
obviously not following what we were saying and was referring to some of
the recent computer sound systems the call themselves "3D sound".
What I would like to learn is... can true binaural stereo sound be
synthesized by such computer programs? Does anyone on the list have
knowledge of this?
