That's not correct Rod... If the reserve is $2500 and 
someone places a maximum bid of $3000 then the bid will not 
go to $2500.  It will go to the next increment, which might
be $301.  It will stay below the reserve unless if bidding
from two parties brings it above it.

I am sure this is what happened.  When I really want something
I place a high bid too.

No, it could have been $1000.  As I said, the minimum bid
does not automatically adjust above the reserve unless if
bidding from two parties brings it there.  So the reserve
in this case was between $300 and $2500 and we will never know
what it was.
